Synopsis: Upon facing their first Christmas without their father, the March sisters—Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy—along with their mother, Marmee, try to make it the best Christmas they can. The young women live in genteel poverty while their father is away serving as a chaplain for the Union Army during the Civil War. They are not as impoverished as their neighbors, the Hummels, whom Marmee encourages the girls to help by bringing them their Christmas Eve dinner as an act of charity. This inspires their next-door neighbor, Mr. Laurence, to spread cheer and generosity on Christmas evening by sharing his feast with the March family.
It is then that the girls first meet the boy next door, Theodore Laurence, though he prefers to go by Laurie. This encounter sparks a friendship between Laurie and the March sisters, especially Jo. Laurie and Jo become best friends, creating stories and getting into mischief together. Filled with joy, bickering, homemade theater, tragedy, love, and friendship, Little Women is a wonderful slice of American life during the turbulent years of the Civil War.
